The
main and the biggest village on Dugi Otok. Administrative,
economical and urban centre of the island. It was named after
salt fields and it was mentioned for the first time in 1105.
It is placed in the NE part of the island, with a thousand
year of fishermen tradition.
It is famous for its rich cultural heritage, the gothic church
of Sv. Marija built in 15th century, where once used
to be a Medieval church. It's ornated by linear Pleter pattern
with monumental wooden altar with two Renaissance paintings.
In the village there are several gothic, Renaissance and baroque
houses, and the first written document about Sali from 990
AD is about fishery and houses in the nearby Telascica.
In
Sali many activities are developed: agriculture, tourism and
fishery - catching and manufacturing fish. In the village
there is butchery, bakery, a few general stores, restaurants,
taverns, pubs, a doctor's office, a dentist, a post office
with telephone cabins, a bank and port authorities. There
is a repair workshop for yachts and other ships.
During
the summer there are many festivities in Sali, among
which the most famous is Saljske Uzance, a folk festivity
that represents the rich tradition and rituals of the village.
It is held one week before the festivity of Velika Gospa (15.
08) and lasts a couple of days. It is recommended: Fishermen's
night (on Friday), the Night of Sali (on Saturday),
and the Donkey Race (on Sunday). The main attraction
of Saljske uzance is donkey music, a group of 20-30
young men, dressed
in a traditional fashion, playing ox horns, old irons and
drums, performing funny melodies. Donkey music performed at
the famous Venice carnival and represented the Croatian tourist
board in Munich. For a number of years, Sali has been organizing
Sali Cultural Summer (July-August), while many theatre companies,
painters, writers, as well as other artists make their contribution
to the culture of Sali and the entire island.
The vicinity of Kornati and the cove of Telascica make
Sali a window to these marvelous beauties of the Adriatic
Sea, and the village has all the predispositions for development
of nautical, scuba diving as well as all others types of tourism.
